Abstract
Depression affects patients with mental disorders, causing them to experience prolonged sadness and loss of interest in activities. Uncontrolled depression causes many people to commit suicide. Painting art therapy is a good choice for depression sufferers. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of painting art therapy on the level of depression in mental disorder patients at PSBL HS 1 Cengkareng Jakarta. This research used a quantitative design with a quasi pre-experimental method, two-group pretest-posttest design with a sample of 79 participants. Univariate and bivariate analysis used the Wilcoxon signed rank test and Chi Square test. The results showed that mental disorder patients before painting therapy experienced mild levels of depression (84.8%), but after painting therapy they became less depressed (50.6%). Patients with mental disorders after painting therapy in the intervention group experienced a significant decrease in mean scores of 53.05% (p < 0.05), while in the control group showed a significant increase of 4.29% (p > 0.05). There was a significant effect of painting therapy on the level of depression in mental disorders patients (p < 0.05). There was no significant relationship between patient characteristics and the level of depression in mental disorder patients (p > 0.05).
